How to create a more sustainable home with aluminium windows

Sustainability is becoming one of the key considerations for homeowners when they choose to upgrade their windows.

At the heart of these decisions is our planet and choosing materials that minimise waste whilst cutting down on emissions. Although most homeowners do not realise that choosing sustainable aluminium windows for homes is not only beneficial for our environment, but financially too.

Indeed, by reducing heat transfer, you’ll have less need to use your central heating, lowering both emissions and the amount you spend on energy per month.

Thanks to advancements in design and manufacturing, aluminium windows now offer excellent thermal performance, competing with other popular window materials. Aluminium frames are also highly recyclable and offer an exceptionally long lifespan, making them a durable and sustainable choice for modern homes. We explore them in more detail in this blog.

What makes aluminium such a sustainable window material?

Aluminium has a strong case for being one of the most sustainable materials used in home construction today. From its exceptionally long lifespan to its recyclability, here’s why it stands out.

Longevity

One of the biggest sustainability wins with aluminium window frames is simply how long they last. Our aluminium windows carry a 25-year guarantee against peeling, warping and bowing, and a well-maintained aluminium window can last considerably longer than that.

Why does longevity matter? Because the longer a product lasts, the less often it needs replacing. Fewer replacements mean less demand for raw materials, less energy used in manufacturing and less waste. What’s more, unlike traditional timber frames for instance, you don’t need to worry about aluminium windows deteriorating or changing shape through weather seasons, or insect infestation. Aluminium naturally develops a protective oxide layer that keeps frames in excellent condition year after year, with minimal maintenance and no frequent repairs required.

Recyclability

Aluminium is one of the most recyclable materials on the planet. At the end of their useful life, aluminium window frames can be fully recovered and reused without any loss of quality,  a perfect example of the circular economy in action. Crucially, recycling aluminium uses around 95% less energy than producing it from raw materials (source: The International Aluminium Association), which dramatically reduces its long-term environmental impact.

Choosing aluminium windows means investing in a recyclable material that supports sustainable practices across its entire lifecycle, from aluminium production right through to eventual recycling.

Improved thermal performance

Our aluminium windows use polyamide thermal break technology. We know that sounds confusing, so think of it as a layer of insulation sitting inside the frame, interrupting thermal transfer so warmth can’t escape through the frame itself. This directly reduces heat loss, cuts energy use and helps maintain a comfortable indoor environment all year round.

Our windows achieve U-values as low as 1.4 W/m²K. Essentially, a U-value measures how much heat passes through a material, so the lower the figure, the better the insulation. They achieve a Window Energy Rating of A or B, comfortably meeting UK Building Regulations (Document L). For even greater performance, we can accommodate glass units up to 44mm, meaning triple glazing is a straightforward option if you want to go further.

The role windows play in creating a sustainable home

Energy efficiency in a window refers to how well it prevents unwanted heat from escaping or entering your home. A poorly insulated window allows warm air to leak out in winter through heat loss and air leakage, meaning your boiler burns more fuel to compensate. In summer, excess heat gets in, pushing up cooling bills.

High-performance aluminium systems reduce that heat transfer significantly, with two clear benefits:

  • Environmentally, lower energy consumption means fewer carbon emissions. Improving thermal performance is one of the most impactful steps you can take to reduce your household’s carbon footprint and support a more sustainable future.
  • Financially, less energy use means lower energy bills. Whether it’s heating costs in winter or cooling bills in summer, better-insulated windows reduce what you spend on electricity bills and gas month after month. Over the long lifespan of your windows, those cost savings are significant.

Upgrading from old double glazing to modern aluminium windows with triple glazing takes that performance even further, reducing heat loss and cutting energy costs considerably.

What are the other benefits of aluminium windows?

Thermal performance aside, the benefits of aluminium windows go well beyond sustainability.

Slim sightlines and natural light

Because aluminium is inherently strong, frames can be made much slimmer than alternatives. Slimmer frames mean a larger glass area, which means more natural light entering your home.

More natural light reduces your reliance on artificial lighting during the day, another small but meaningful reduction in energy use and electricity bills.

Strength and security

The lightweight nature of aluminium belies just how strong it is. Our windows are accredited to PAS 24 security standards and are Document Q compliant, fitted with multi-point locking systems that secure the frame at several points simultaneously, making forced entry far more difficult than a traditional single-point lock.

Customisation

With over 200 RAL colours, dual-colour options, metallic finishes and wood grain effects, our aluminium windows can be tailored to suit any property. Hardware can be personalised too, with handles available in Chrome, Satin, Gold, Black and Graphite Grey.

Easy cleaning

Aluminium frames need nothing more than an occasional wipe down with warm soapy water. No repainting, no treatments, no fuss.

Sustainable aluminium windows for homes: What are my options?

We offer a range of aluminium window styles to suit different homes and tastes.

Aluminium window styles

Casement windows

The most common window style in UK homes, renowned for simplicity. They open inwards or outwards using a handle, and they’re likely already installed somewhere in your home.

Alitherm 300 is our classic casement option, available with curved, bevelled or square edge profiles to suit a range of architectural styles.

Flush windows

The sash sits completely flush (level) within the outer frame, creating a smooth, flat exterior.

We recommend the Alitherm 400 for flush installations, it achieves a U-value of 1.4 W/m²K and carries an A+ rating in the BRE Green Guide, making it one of the most environmentally friendly window choices available.

Timber effect

Our Alitherm 600 replicates the look of traditional timber windows without any of the upkeep.

Deeper profiles give the appearance of wood joinery, ideal for period properties, but with all the low environmental impact and long lifespan benefits of aluminium.

Heritage windows

The Alitherm Heritage range replicates the look of traditional steel-framed windows, ideal for listed buildings or art deco properties. Despite the classic aesthetic, they include full thermal break technology and PAS 24 security accreditation, combining heritage looks with modern aluminium systems performance.

Aluminium window colours

Our aluminium windows are available in over 200 RAL colours with a durable polyester powder coat finish.

Choose from popular shades like Anthracite Grey, Jet Black and Crisp White, or go bolder with metallic effects, marine grade finishes and wood grain textures.

A dual-colour option lets you pick one colour for the exterior and a different one for the interior, so you can keep things neutral inside while making a real statement outside.
