Conservatory roof replacement: When and why it’s necessary

Conservatories have long offered an attractive range of benefits, explaining their place in British homes since the 16th century. Whether you love to use your extension as a cosy place to curl up with a book, a home office for productivity, a gym or even an additional kitchen, comfortable conservatories promise to significantly add to your home’s value.

However, with older extensions especially, comfort is not always guaranteed. We’ve all stepped into a friend’s or relative’s conservatory only to see a canvas of condensation, with the temperature inside making it feel as though you’ve entered a space more suited to penguins than people.

Conservatories like this help no one. The good news is that it’s relatively straightforward to transform the fortunes of the space and turn it into a room that stays the same temperature all-year-round.

Usually all you need is a conservatory roof replacement (that’s where a lot of heat escapes) and you’re promised a living area that not only increases your home’s value but lowers energy bills and provides you with a comfortable, year-round spot.

Signs that a conservatory roof replacement may be required

Not sure if your conservatory roof has had its day? Here are the most common warning signs we see when visiting UK homeowners.

Condensation and leaks

If you’re spotting damp patches, water marks or pooling moisture inside your conservatory, the roof is failing. Heavy rain often makes the problem worse, and over time leaks can damage your window frames, flooring and furniture.

Visible deterioration

Cracked polycarbonate panels, discoloured glass panels or sagging sections all point to a roof that’s lost its structural integrity. An old conservatory roof can become unsafe, so it’s worth getting it checked by a professional.

Poor insulation

If your energy bills have crept up and the room feels draughty, your conservatory roof insulation probably isn’t doing its job. Heat loss through the roof is a huge issue in traditional conservatory roofs, particularly older polycarbonate roof designs.

Temperature control issues

Too hot in summer, too cold in winter. As the Energy Saving Trust writes, around 25% of heat loss in a poorly insulated home escapes through the roof. If your conservatory feels unusable for half the year, a replacement roof will sort that out quickly.

Why a conservatory roof replacement is beneficial

A new conservatory roof is the best way to turn your extension into a year-round space, somewhere you love to spend time in. Here’s why replacement conservatory roofs are worthwhile investments:

Better energy efficiency and lower bills

Energy efficiency simply means how well your home keeps heat in and unwanted heat out (reducing the transfer of heat from one side to the other). A new solid conservatory roof or modern glass roof dramatically reduces heat loss, which means smaller energy bills and a space that is the same comfortable temperature year-round.

A more comfortable space all year round

Modern roofs reduce external noise from heavy rain, block harsh solar glare and keep temperatures steady. The result is a comfortable living space you’ll actually want to use in January as well as June.

Improved style and home value

A roof replacement updates the appearance of your conservatory and can add real value when you come to sell. Any potential buyer will appreciate the appeal of extra floorspace, and as a result you can reflect your investment with the asking price should you ever wish to sell.

Peace of mind

A new roof installed to current building regulations gives you long-lasting structural safety, which is the most important thing when investing in your home.

What conservatory roof options are available to me?

There are three main types of roof we install. Each one suits a slightly different homeowner.

Tiled conservatory roof

Our Equinox tiled roof system from Eurocell turns your conservatory into a genuine new room. It’s available in 11 tile colours, including Charcoal, Slate Grey, Antique Red and Moss Green, with U-values as low as 0.5 W/m²K (the lower the U-value, the better the insulation).

  • Excellent thermal performance for year-round use
  • Reduces rainfall noise and solar glare
  • Made from 75% recycled materials
  • Can be installed in around two days
  • Optional glass sections for natural light

Windows can be incorporated, so you do get natural light.

Glass conservatory roof

Glass conservatory roofs are perfect if natural light is your top priority. We use 24mm glazing with self-cleaning glass as standard, and you can choose super clear, super blue, super neutral, super aqua or super bronze finishes.

This glass is chosen for its thermal performance too, meaning it won’t overheat or become too stuffy in the summer, an issue with single-glazed conservatories of yesteryear that often ended up feeling more like a greenhouse than somewhere you’d want to unwind with a book.

  • Maximum natural light intake
  • Self-cleaning glass activated by sunlight and rain
  • Optional solar control glass for the best in thermal performance
  • Manual or automatic vent options

Hybrid conservatory roof

A hybrid combines the warmth and insulation of a tiled roof system with the brightness of glass panels. You get the best of both worlds, ideal if you want a cosy room that still feels open and airy.

  • Balanced light and insulation
  • Flexible design options to suit any property
  • Great for conservatory conversion projects
